Find out how dentures and false teeth are made at Burnside Denture Clinic
Choosing a Clinical Dental Technician to make your new denturesIf your looking for a one stop denture expert, Clinical Dental Technicians offer denture services direct to denture patients. Some patients find this service more convenient and reassuring, knowing that all stages of denture production are undertaken by the same indiviudal, Clinical Dental Technician both make and fit dentures directly. This is helpful if you have particular concerns concerning how the denture teeth are set and would like to communicate your thoughts and concerns, during the process, directly with the practitioner making them.
Primary Impressions and model casting (1 - 2 hours clinical and laboratory time)The first stage required for making new dentures requires moulds being taken of your mouth. These accuracy of these moulds are important as they will form the basis, for the consrtuction of your new dentures, these moulds are taken in universal manufactured impression trays. Once the moulds have been taken and after they are disinfected, the moulds are poured with vacuum mixed dental plaster and allowed to set. This provides your clinical dental technician with a primary working models with which to construct your new detures It is important these mouldings are poured soon after being removed from the mouth, to help minimise distortion that occurs with impression materials, distorted mouldings can lead to poor fitting dentures. Our onsite dental laboratory ensures that all mouldings are poured within 2 hours of being taken in the clinic.
Secondary Impressions (1 hours clinical time)
In some instances it is necessary to take a second, more details impression of your jaws. Custom made impression plates are contructed on the primary models, providing an far more accurate impression tray with which to take secondary impressions. As these trays will more closely follow the shape of your jaws, less mould material is required, this results in a highly detailed and functional secondary moulding of your jaws. These mouldings are then poured in vacuum mixed dental stone in the dental laboratory by your clinical dental technician.
Bite registrationA bite registration is required to establish your correct biting position, this is intended to restore your biting position as it was when you had all of your natural teeth.
Bite registration using wax blocks (30 minutes clinical time)This is most commonly achieved by the fabrication of wax blocks on the master models, these wax blocks are made to fit your jaws, but made lagre enough to carve, shape and adapt to your correct biting position. Craeful measurements are taken to establish your jaw position to it's ideal biting position. The wax blocks are then marked with various indicating lines to help your clinical dental technician place the denture teeth in the most natural position.
Bite registration using gothic arch systems (1 hours clinical time)A more technical way to record your biting position is to use a gothic arch tracing system. This is a more specialised system of recording your biting position and involves you providing a specific tracing of your jaw movements and static biting position. We use two gothic arch systems at our clinic on our premium dentures.Tooth mould selection for your new dentures (30 miuntes clinical time)Depending on the quality of dentures your have chosen, denture teeth are then chosen that match the readings taken by your clinical dental technician. You will be asked to participate in this process and be encouraged to consider the most appropriate tooth colour and shape for you. Some patients provide close up photographs of how their natural teeth looked, helping the clinical dental technician to apply his knowledge of denture tooth selection, appropriate to your facial profile and personality.
Your facial shape, skin tone, eye and hair colour, together with any natural teeth you have will all be influencing factors.
Facebow readings (30 minutes clinical time)For the higher quality dentures we offer, In conjunction with your bite registration appointment or gothic arch tracing a facebow reading may be taken. This is another tool used to correctly position your jaws on an articulator in its correct 3 dimensional position, rather than the more commonly used 2 dimensional position.
Articulation and individual tooth setting in laboratory (2 - 5 hours laboratory time)Depending on the type of articulation required the master models and wax bite rimes are carefuly attached to a dental articulator using a low expansion articulating plaster. This machine allows your clinical dental technician to set the denture teeth according to your specific jaw position, it is even possible to adjust the angles associated with your particular jaw position within the articulators settings.
Each denture tooth is then carefully modified and trimmed to fit within the dental arch and set in denture wax. Where necessary each tooth can also be further characterised using special composite tooth colouring materials - a process we use within the Swiss denture concept.
Trial wax up and occlusal calibration. If a patient has opted for a cosmetic denture option, including denture base cosmetics the wax portion of the trial denture is hand carved to match the contours seen around natural dentition. The completed wax trial dentures are then checked agaisnt the measurements on the articulator, to ensure the teeth have been set correctly and if necessary that they match custom facebow measurements taken. Once the finished trial denture is completed in wax, it is stored at room temperature for the clinical appointment and tried in the mouth. This is carried out with both the patient and Clinical dental technician present, so that any alterations can be carried out if necessary.
Trial denture appointmentAt the trial denture appointment the stability and fit of the denture base is assessed by your clinical dental technician, this is also an opportunity for patients to offer their thoughts. Tooth colour and shape will be also be critiqued and patients are given an opportunity to see the trial wax dentures in a mirror. Your clinical dental technician will also assess your ability to sound certain words or letters and that the dentures have been constructed to restore sunken features and lips where appropriate. Occasionally a second trial appoitment may be booked, particularly where significant alterations have been discussed and agreed, this will allow the clinical dental technician time to complete these alterations in the laboratory.
