Partial dentures Overview
Partial dentures are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Partial denture frameworks can be made from lightweight alloys, plastic (acrylic) materials or flexible thermoplastic materials.
The different types of partial denture bases all have artificial teeth attached, again those teeth are available in several materials; acrylics, porcelain, composite and more recently NHC (nano hybrid composite) materials.
Metal alloys, flexible clips, precision attachments or dental implants can also be used to provide additional support and grip for a partial dentures.
Where possible the clasps or attachments are hidden so that they can't be seen when you smile or talk.
Types of partial denture
Chrome tooth borne removable partial dentures (also known as metal or chrome-cobalt dentures) utilise the support of healthy, natural teeth to provide extra retention (grip) for a partial denture and more importantly distribute the loading and stresses of a partial denture through the natural teeth. This prevents the denture compressing and damaging delicate tissue structures surrounding those teeth. These partial dentures are manufactured in a lightweight biocompatible chrome alloy such as Vitallium 2000. Acrylic materials are then used to attach artificial teeth to the cast framework, these dentures are stronger than acrylic partial dentures and the partial dentures of choice. Cobalt- Chrome (CO-CR) dental plates can be designed in various ways to suit individual patients, for example using a 'skeleton' design which minimises the surface the denture will come into contact with.
Although more expensive, Chrome dentures are the partial dentures of choice, for the long term integrity of your remaining natural teeth and overall oral health. Tooth borne Chrome-Cobalt removable partial dentures require careful design and planning using a dental surveyor and master casts.
Burnside Dental Studio consults with patients on all Chrome denture designs, prior to manufacture, allowibng patients to see the design process as it progresses.
Sometimes careful preparation or modification of your natural teeth is required to facilitate a successfull tooth borne removable partial denture.
Tissue borne removable partial dentures (plastic dentures) utilise the soft tissues (gums) and palate of your mouth to provide support for a partial denture. Although they surround natural teeth, tooth borne partial dentures lack the extra support of their tooth borne counterparts as they do not rest on natural teeth in the right way.
During function (chewing and biting) these partial denures are less stable, with a tendancy to displace in the opposite direction to forces applied to them, this can lead to gradual damage to the soft tissues of your mouth. Acrylic partial dentures occasionally have wrought (made by hand from bent wire) metal clips to help retain the denture.
Acrylic partial dentures are cheaper to manufacture and require less sophististicated design and planning than cast Chrome-Cobalt partial dentures and are often prescribed and fitted when cost is an issue.
Tissue borne removable partial dentures are often made from acrylic (plastic) materials and are more lilely to fracture under repeated load.
Cost of plastic partial dentures
Flexible partial dentures incorporate materials such as Valplast or Flexite and have become popular with many patients due to their flexible and comfortable nature.
These flexible materials tend to be thermoplastic and warm and adapt to body temperatures. They are not acrylic but nylon based materials.
The artificial teeth that are attached to these flexible dentures need to incoporate mechanical retention (holes are often drilled through the teeth) to allow them to be attached to the denture base, as acrylic teeth and nylon flexible materials do not form a chemical bond together.
These materials also require special cleaning products for maintenance.
